Disclaimer: As per usual, the good things in life are not mine to have, but belong to someone else... in this case Hasbro, Takara and IDW and anyone else I’ve forgotten…
Authors Notes: I had fun doing the prowlxjazz Anniversary Challenge, if no one else enjoyed reading them. So when tf_rare_pairing announced their October challenge, I thought I might try something similar. Though this is going to be different as I have to write on a daily basis again. But that was fun when I did it before (both times). So yeah… wish the ever-more-eccentric one luck?
Feedback makes friends. Flames dealt with by the masters of paranoia and fire, Red Alert and Inferno

He wasn’t there when it happened, but he was there to see the aftermath.  He was the one to check over their Prime.  To check over his lover.  He was the one who saw the damage, saw how Megatron’s sword had cut right through Optimus’ spark.  And it just as surely cut through his.  He stayed knelt by Optimus’ form, pain creasing his faceplates.  How could this have happened?  After everything they’d been through, how could this have happened?

Ironhide’s hand landed on his shoulder, bringing his attention back to the present.
“Lennox will have him transported back to the base.” Ratchet didn’t know what to say to that, so simply nodded.  It was rare for him to be without words, but he just couldn’t… didn’t… wouldn’t… He gazed down at Optimus’ frame, not quite seeing the huge hole in his chest.
“Come on.  We should get back to the base.” Ironhide urged him to his feet, steadying him for a moment.  As one, they lifted their Prime, carrying him to the edge of the forest where Lennox’s men could transport him back to the base.

“It’s what Prime would want.” Those words from Ironhide stopped Ratchet making any further protest.  He settled down and nodded.  Optimus would have wanted them to stay and help their new comrades.  He would have wanted Ratchet to carry on, rather than run away and hide.  Which was exactly what he wanted to do.  He hurt too much to want to stay on the planet where his lover had died.  Even as much as he wanted to (wrongly) take his revenge on Megatron.

When they were filled in on Sam’s plan, Ratchet couldn’t believe his audios.  Prime’s spark was no more, how could Sam hope to revive him.  But the young man’s belief moved something in him.  Even as he helped the NEST soldiers to hold off the oncoming Decepticons, he found himself praying to Primus.  Praying that Sam was right.  That Optimus could be revived.

When Sam fell, Ratchet felt the pain anew, the deep hurt that he’d felt back in the forest.  The spark-breaking knowledge that his lover was dead.  The hope he’d had that Sam could revive Optimus died.  But as Sam took another breath, Ratchet felt his vents catch.  He continued on to Optimus and Ratchet could do nothing but watch and hope.

“Optimus…” He breathed the words out as Optimus sat up with a roar.  Then, there was the blur of battle, Jetfire’s sacrifice, and Ratchet found himself back in the thick of it.

It was only once they were back at the NEST base, that he could touch Optimus, prove to himself that his lover was functioning again.  Wrapped in strong arms, he leant against his Prime, leant against his lover, soaking up the warmth and focussing on the pulsing of his spark.
